I choose female genital mutilation because honestly I just wanted to know what female genital mutilation is all about and why it is so controversial. I want to know why so many people put their loved ones through that type of punishment consistently. Is it really punishment or tradition? Is this act outdated? Many people think that it is unjust, awful, and gruesome in our country but over 100 million girls world wide go through it, entering into womanhood.

Female Genital Mutilation is the act of removing a girls clitoris before a girl becomes a woman. Usually it occurs before a girl turns 15. I know that people do it to these little girls, so that they are less likely to cheat on their husband and these young women don't get to feel the pleasure of sex, so the act of FGM is thought to eliminate cheating in the aspect of having sex with anyone other than their husband.

I want to know who initiated this practice and why it is so important for certain cultures to perform the act of Female Genital Mutilation. If millions of girls are going through this every year, people have to see some good in FGM. Does this have some religious stand point? Why is this "Normal?" Do people think twice about it after performing this act? Are mothers standing by their daughters holding their hand while someone removes their daughters their genitals? Is this actually something girls are excited for because this means that they are finally a woman?

  1. You maybe should think of reading Papillon's story She's French but she was taken back to Senegal and circumcised. She says it ruined her life.
